Алберт Мишелсон и Едвард Морли го повториле Физовиот опит со подобрена прецизност, справувајќи се со неколку проблеми на оргиналниот експеримент:(1) Деформација на оптичките компоненти на Физовиот апарат би можела да предизвика вештачко поместување, (2) набљудувањето било избрзано, бидејќи протокот на водата под притисок траел кратко време,(3) имало несигурност во Физовото утврдување на протокот низ дијаметаротпречникот на цевките. Мишелсон го редизајнирал физовиот апарат со цевки со поголем дијаметар и поголем резервар обезбедувајќи 3 минути од постојан проток на вода. Неговиот интерферометарски дизајн за обичен пат обезбедил автоматска компензација на должината на патот, така што работ на белата светлина бил видлив веднаш штом оптичките елементи биле усогласени.
