Оригиналната етимологија на ова име се смета дека има свои корени во некогаш доминантниот [[зороастризам]]. Во [[Авеста]] („Химна на ангелите чувари“), се споменува ''âterepâtahe ashaonô fravashîm ýazamaide'', кое буквално се преведува како „''ние му се поклонуваме на Фраваши од Атропатена''“. Името „атропати“ самата е грчка транслитерација. Грчкото име го споменале [[Диодор Сицилиски|Диодор]] и [[Страбон]]. Во текот на милениумот, името се развило во Атурапакан, потоа во Адабарбадхаган, Ахарбајаган, Асарбадјан и денешен Азербејџан.
