По студирањето на неколку германски универзитети, работел како професор на [[Нов Завет|Новиот завет]] . Тој применал на критични методи во работата на радикалниот скептицизам, особено во анализата на [[Евангелие|Евангелието]], кое е претставено во ''историјата на неоптичната традиција''( [[1921]], [[1931]], [[1934]] ). Во делото на ''Исус со'' (1926)збора, тој зборува за мисијата на [[Исус Христос|Христос]] во која ги собрал своите ученици, но на крајот доаѓа до идејата дека целосно ја негира неговата откупна мисија и неговото морално учење.Со екстремен историски скептицизам, паралела меѓу историјата и религијата покажува потреба да се демитологизира Новиот завет . Ги цитира митолошките елементи на Новиот заветбезгрешно зачнување и раѓање) и тврди дека евангелската приказна е заснована на митолошки концепти на Универзумот. Бултман сметал дека ако митскиот елемент целосно бил исфрлен, вистинското значење на Евангелието целосно ќе го изгуби своето значење.
