Многу од својствата на технициумот биле предвидени од [[Дмитриј Иванович Менделеев|Дмитриј Менделеев]] пред откривањето на елементот. Менделеев забележал јаз во својата периодичен систем и му дал на неоткриениот елемент привременото име ''екаманганец'' ( ''Ем'' ). Во 1937 година, технециумот (поточно технециум-97 изотопот) стана првиот доминантно вештачки елемент што требало да се произведе, па оттука и неговото име (од грчкиот {{Јаз|el|τεχνητός}} , што значи "синтетички или вештачки", + {{Безпрелом|''[[wikt:-ium#Suffix|-ium]]'').}}
 
Еден краткотраен [[Гама-зрачење|гама зрак]] - емитува нуклеарен изомер на технициум- технициум-99m - се користат во нуклеарна медицина во широк спектар на дијагностички тестови, како што се дијагнози на рак на коските. Основата на овој [[нуклид]] , технециум-99, се користи како извор на [[Бета-честичка|бета-честички]] без гама зраци. Долговечните технициумови изотопи комерцијално произведени се нус-производи на [[Нуклеарна фисија|фисија]] на [[ураниум-235]] во [[Нуклеарен реактор|нуклеарни реактори]] и се извлечени од стапчиња за нуклеарно гориво . Бидејќи нема изотоп на технециум има [[Период на полураспад|полу]]<nowiki/>подолг живот од 4,2 милиони години ( технециум-98 ), откривањето на технециум во [[Црвен џин|црвените гиганти]] од 1952 година помогна да се докаже дека ѕвездите можат да произведат потешки елементи.

Бидејќи искористеното гориво е дозволено да стои неколку години пред повторното процесирање, сите молибден-99 и технециум-99м се распаѓаат од времето кога фитилните производи се одвоени од главните [[Актиноиди|актиниди]] во конвенционалното нуклеарно преработување .
